Apple CarPlay, it has nothing to do with safety!
It would have been hard to miss the news that Apple has launched CarPlay at the Motor Show in Geneva. The objective is to give drivers a “smarter, safer, and more fun” way to use iPhones in cars. Why do I find that hard to believe?
If you have not heard much about CarPlay let’s just say it connects your iPhone through Siri to your dashboard. Through commanding Siri it will allow you to easily make calls, use maps, listen to music and access messages.
Nothing here that I can’t already do with my iPhone conviently placed on lap.
Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo are ready to launch with many other car manufacturers working with Apple.
So while CarPlay will be a safer option than having your iPhone on your lap, if Apple was really concerned with safety they would discourage any form of mobile use while driving a car.
So it has nothing to do with safety but everything to do with taking ownership of another screen you will interact with regularly on a daily basis.
If the screen is going to be central to managing all that functions in a car then maybe Apple have taken the first step in taking control of your next car?
